Frequently Asked

How we work and what to expect

  • What is ABA therapy and how does it help my child?

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is a branch of psychology that helps us understand why behavior happens and how to create meaningful change.

While it’s often associated with autism, it’s actually used across fields like fitness, education, and performance coaching—it’s simply the science of how behavior works.

At Ovation, we use that science to build communication, independence, and regulation skills—so daily life feels smoother and less overwhelming for your child (and for you).

    Does ABA therapy “cure” autism?

No — that’s not our goal. We don’t believe in changing who your child is.

We focus on supporting how they move through their day—reducing stress, increasing communication, and helping them access the environments that matter most to your family.

  • How do you create individualized treatment plans?

We start by understanding your child as a whole person—what lights them up, how they learn, and what they’re motivated by.

From there, we build a plan using naturalistic, play-based strategies that actually engage them.

We also build around your family—what you can realistically commit to and what will make the biggest difference in your day-to-day life.

Every plan is fully individualized and adjusted over time. There’s never just one way to reach a goal—we find what works.

What does a typical session look like?

For home-based services, sessions are built into your child’s natural routine. We start by checking in with you, reviewing any updates, and setting a plan for the session.

From there, we focus on building rapport, motivation, and engagement. While there may be some more structured teaching moments, the majority of our work happens through play and everyday activities. We naturally embed opportunities to work on your child’s goals while collecting data to guide what comes next. If it looks like we’re just having fun, that’s your sign we’re doing it right—there’s intention behind every moment.

In the beginning, sessions may look like we’re not “doing much.” That’s intentional. For many children, even our presence is a big adjustment, so we move at a pace that builds trust. ABA is a long-game therapy, and we approach it thoughtfully and systematically—while still collecting data to guide what comes next.

In our center, the day is structured similarly to a preschool program, with activities like morning meeting, art, snack, social time, and movement. Goals are embedded throughout the day, with dedicated 1:1 teaching built into the schedule. Our approach to teaching is the same as at home—naturalistic, play-based, and individualized to each child.

  • What qualifications do your BCBAs and BTs have?

All services are designed and overseen by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), licensed in New Jersey and grounded in play-based, naturalistic learning. Our team brings experience across a wide range of settings, needs, and skill areas, and regularly collaborates to ensure each child benefits from shared clinical expertise.

Our BCBAs participate in ongoing continuing education as well as Ovation-specific training to maintain a high standard of care and stay current in the field.

We’re intentional about who we bring onto our team—we don’t just hire anyone. Each Behavior Technician comes with relevant experience in areas like autism, childcare, or special education (or is actively pursuing a related field), and receives targeted training before working with clients.

They are supported through frequent supervision across cases, along with ongoing Ovation-specific training. While RBT certification is not required, many of our BTs hold this credential, and we’re proud that several have been inspired to continue their education and pursue becoming BCBAs themselves.

  • How do you measure progress and involve parents?

We measure progress through ongoing data collection and regular review of your child’s goals, but what matters most is how things are showing up in your day-to-day life.

We hold monthly team meetings to review progress, make adjustments, and align on next steps. Outside of that, your BCBA will work with you to find a level of involvement that fits your schedule and your goals.

While some parent training is required by insurance, we view parents as an essential part of the process. The more involved you are, the more meaningful and lasting the progress tends to be—but we meet you where you are.

ABA isn’t meant to be forever. Everything we do is with generalization in mind, meaning as skills are mastered, we’re gradually shifting them into your hands so they carry over beyond sessions.

  • How does insurance billing work for ABA services?

We start by verifying your insurance benefits and reviewing them with you before submitting your initial authorization.

Once approved, we handle billing directly with your insurance. If your plan includes a copay, coinsurance, or deductible, you’ll receive a statement once claims are finalized.

We’ll review all expected costs with you upfront so there are no surprises. Insurance timelines can vary, and our team will guide you through the process and help navigate any questions along the way.

What are your cancellation and rescheduling policies?

We understand that things come up, and we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations whenever possible. We also encourage families to stay open to scheduling make-up sessions to maintain consistency.

Consistency is a key part of progress. Regular sessions allow us to build momentum and create meaningful, lasting change.

If cancellations become frequent, we’ll connect with you to adjust your schedule or determine the best next steps to ensure services remain effective.

  • How is safety ensured during sessions?

Safety is built into everything we do.

Each child’s plan is designed with their individual needs in mind, including proactive strategies to support regulation, reduce risk, and create a safe, predictable environment.

Our team is trained to recognize early signs of frustration or dysregulation and respond in a calm, supportive way. Sessions are overseen by BCBAs who continuously monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.

We focus on prevention first—setting children up for success so challenging situations are less likely to occur in the first place.
